Problems
While normally very
reliable, your Dell laptop power cord can break down
just like any other electrical device. There are several
reasons that a problem can occur. Some of most common
are:
Short
Circuits
Short circuits can be caused
by either physical or electrical damage. Electrical overload
can burn the circuits and render the adapter useless. Treating
the adapter roughly, such as dropping it or stepping on it can
cause physical damage resulting in a short circuit. One
indicator of a short circuit is the light on the adapter going
out when you plug the cord into the laptop. Generally a short
circuit is not repairable and replacement is the only
option.
Power Related
Problems
Spikes in power happen all the
time. If a power surge happens, it may ruin the power adapter.
Lightning hitting a power line or a faulty transformer on the
line are common causes of power spikes. In order to protect you
power cord, you should always plug your power adapter into a
surge protector. These are inexpensive and definitely worth the
cost.
Problems With
Connectors
It is very common for the
connector that plugs into the back of the laptop to become
damaged. The point where the cord attaches to the connector is
especially susceptible to damage because this area is subject
to lots of bending. This can eventually break the wire inside
the cord. This is often indicated by a blinking light on the
adapter. The connector can sometimes be replaced and repaired.
These connectors can be purchased inexpensively, so often this
is worth a try.
Your Dell laptop power cord is
built to withstand normal wear, but problems can still occur.
When it fails, it can be very frustrating because your laptop
won't work very long without a power adapter. While some
problems can be repaired, most people opt for replacement
because it is generally quicker than trying to fix the
adapter.
